Description: This small panel is the left wing of a lost diptych (a two-paneled altarpiece). The sitter, shown from the chest up, has been identified as Canon Joris van der Paele, a wealthy cloth merchant and advisor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Van der Paele commissioned the work to commemorate his engagement to Elisabeth van Cleynaerts.
