Description: This portrait shows William Hookham Carpenter (1758-1834), a London-based surgeon and obstetrician. He was the son of a surgeon and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1784. He was elected a fellow in 1797 and delivered the Hunterian Oration in 1819. He was also physician to the Westminster General Dispensary and the St. Marylebone Dispensary.
