Description: This is a preparatory drawing for the altarpiece of the church of S. Alvise in Venice. The altarpiece was commissioned by the Procurator of St. Mark, Girolamo Zulian, and was completed in 1740. The subject of the painting is the martyrdom of St. Alvise, who was a bishop of Constantinople. He was martyred in 304 AD during the reign of Diocletian.
