Artist: Giuseppe Piattoli
Artwork: The Sword of Damocles
Description: This is a pen and brown ink drawing over black chalk on paper. The painting depicts a scene from the story of Damocles, a courtier in the court of Dionysius II of Syracuse. Damocles had flattered Dionysius, calling him the happiest man alive. To show Damocles how precarious his position was, Dionysius invited him to a banquet where he was seated on a throne with a sword hanging over his head by a single horsehair.
