Description: The painting depicts the young actor William Henry West Betty (1791-1874) in the role of Young Norval from John Home’s tragedy Douglas (1756). Betty was a child prodigy who made his London debut at Covent Garden in 1804, aged thirteen, in the same role. The portrait was commissioned by the actor’s father, Henry Betty, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1805.
