Description: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. The fresco is located in the Stanza di Eliodoro, one of the four Raphael Rooms in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. The fresco depicts the story of Heliodorus, a general of the Seleucid king Seleucus IV Philopator, who attempted to steal the treasures of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Book of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus was prevented from doing so by a divine intervention, in which two angels appeared and scourged him and his men. Raphael’s fresco depicts the moment when Heliodorus is being scourged by the angels. The fresco is a masterpiece of Renaissance painting, and is considered one of Raphael’s best works.
