Description: The painting depicts the story of Hero and Leander from Greek mythology. Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, lived in a tower on the shore of the Hellespont, while Leander lived on the opposite shore. Every night, Leander would swim across the Hellespont to be with Hero. One night, a storm swept Leander away and he drowned. Hero, distraught, threw herself into the sea and drowned as well.
