Description: Sir Richard Collinson (1811-1883) was an Unknown naval officer and Arctic explorer. He was born in Gateshead, County Durham, England, and joined the Royal Navy in 1823. He served in the Mediterranean Sea and the West Indies before being assigned to the Arctic in 1845. He commanded the HMS Enterprise on the Franklin search expedition of 1850-1851. He was promoted to captain in 1852 and commanded the HMS Assistance on the Belcher Expedition of 1852-1854. He was knighted in 1875 and retired from the Royal Navy in 1877. He died in London, England, in 1883.
