Description: The painting depicts the moment when Perseus, a Greek hero, turns the followers of Phineus, a king of Thrace, into stone. Perseus had come to rescue Andromeda, the daughter of Phineus, who had been offered as a sacrifice to a sea monster. slaying the monster, Perseus was confronted by Phineus and his followers, who did not believe that he had slain the monster and sought to prevent him from marrying Andromeda. Perseus used the head of Medusa, a Gorgon, to turn them into stone.
