Artist: Amico Aspertini
Artwork: Studies after the Antique: The Fall of Phaethon, Horses
Description: The drawing is a study for a section of a decorative frieze, probably for a cassone (a type of wedding chest). It shows the horses of the sun god Helios (Apollo) as they are driven by his son Phaethon, who loses control and crashes to his death. The composition is based on an ancient Roman relief, which Aspertini has copied in reverse.
