Artist: Thomas Gainsborough
Artwork: Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
Description: Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806), was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer and his wife, Georgiana Poyntz. She was a celebrated beauty and a prominent Whig hostess. Gainsborough painted her in 1785, the year after her marriage to the 5th Duke of Devonshire. The portrait shows Georgiana in a white dress with a black lace shawl. Her hair is dressed in the fashionable style of the day, with a high chignon and curls falling down her shoulders. She is wearing a pearl necklace and a diamond tiara. The portrait is a masterpiece of Gainsborough’s later work. It is a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of a young woman who was at the height of her beauty and popularity.
