Description: The painting depicts the story of Heliodorus, a general of the Seleucid king Seleucus IV Philopator, who was sent to plunder the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Book of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus was prevented from doing so by a vision of an angel on a horse. The angel struck Heliodorus with a whip and drove him out of the Temple. The painting shows Heliodorus being driven out of the Temple by the angel.
