Description: This portrait shows Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804), a Scottish admiral. Duncan distinguished himself during the Anglo-Spanish War and the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1795 he was promoted to vice-admiral and given command of the North Sea Fleet. In 1797 he defeated the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown, for which he was created Viscount Duncan of Camperdown.
