Artist: Raffaello Santi
Artwork: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple
Description: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, painted in 1511-12. The fresco is located in the Stanza di Eliodoro, one of the four Raphael Rooms in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. The painting depicts the story of Heliodorus, a general of the Seleucid king Seleucus IV Philopator, who attempted to steal the treasures of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Book of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus was prevented from doing so by a vision of two angels and a horse with a rider. Raphael’s fresco captures the moment when Heliodorus is thrown from his horse and the angels appear to him. The painting is a masterpiece of the High Renaissance, and is considered one of Raphael’s finest works.
