Description: Guercino, who was born in Cento in 1591, was active in the Emilian cities of Cento, Bologna, and Modena, as well as in Rome, where he worked for Pope Gregory XV. The Expulsion of Hagar, a subject Guercino treated on three other occasions, is here depicted in a landscape setting. The figures of Hagar and the angel are loosely sketched in, and the composition is broadly and summarily painted.
