Description: This is a preparatory drawing by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo for a fresco on the ceiling of the Palazzo Labia in Venice. The fresco depicts a scene from the myth of Phaeton, in which the young god attempts to drive the chariot of the sun across the sky. Tiepolo’s drawing shows a group of putti, or cherubs, playing with bubbles. The putti are depicted in various poses, some flying, some floating, and some tumbling through the air. The drawing is executed in red chalk and brown ink, and is highlighted with white gouache.
