Artist: Raffaello Santi
Artwork: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple
Description: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. The fresco is located in the Stanza di Eliodoro, one of the four Raphael Rooms in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The painting depicts the story of Heliodorus, a general of the Seleucid king Seleucus IV Philopator, who attempted to steal the treasures of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Book of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus was prevented from doing so by a vision of two angels and a man on a horse. Raphael’s fresco captures the moment when Heliodorus is being driven out of the Temple by the angels.
