Artist:Jacopo Tintoretto
Artwork: Belshazzar’s Feast
Description: The painting depicts the story of Belshazzar’s feast, as told in the Book of Daniel. Belshazzar, the king of Babylon, is shown seated at a banquet with his guests. They are drinking from goblets and eating from platters of food. Suddenly, a hand appears and writes on the wall the words “Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin.” Daniel is called in to interpret the writing, and he tells Belshazzar that it means that his kingdom is being divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
