Artist: Joseph Mallord Turner
Artwork: Boats Carrying Pilgrims to the Festa at S. Maria della Salute
Description: In 1819 Turner traveled to Italy, where he was overwhelmed by the architecture, the art, and the scenery. He was particularly drawn to Venice, which he visited several times. This watercolor, painted in 1835, depicts a regatta on the Grand Canal during the Festa della Salute, a festival held annually on November 21 to celebrate the end of the plague in 1630.
