Artwork: Descent from the Cross
Description: The Descent from the Cross is a triptych (three-paneled altarpiece) by the Early Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden, dating from about 1435. The central panel shows the dead Christ being lowered from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, in the presence of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and John the Evangelist. The left panel shows the Virgin Mary fainting in the arms of a holy woman, while the right panel shows two donors, possibly the husband and wife for whom the work was painted, kneeling in prayer.
