Description: Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer and his wife, Georgiana Poyntz. She was a celebrated beauty and a leading figure in Whig society. She married William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, in 1774. They had five children together. Georgiana was a patron of the arts and a friend of many writers and artists, including Thomas Gainsborough, who painted this portrait of her in 1785.
