Description: This painting depicts the story of Hero and Leander, two lovers who lived on opposite sides of the Hellespont. Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, would light a lamp in her tower every night to guide Leander, who would swim across the strait to be with her. One night, a storm blew out the lamp and Leander drowned. Hero, distraught, threw herself into the sea and died.
