Description: Painted in 1807, this history painting by Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853) depicts the release of Marnix van Sint Aldegonde from prison. Marnix van Sint Aldegonde (1538-1598) was a Dutch statesman and writer who played an important role in the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. He was captured by the Spanish in 1573 and imprisoned in the castle of Ghent. In 1574, his release was negotiated by Jacob Simonsz de Rijk (1542-1606), a wealthy merchant from Antwerp. The painting shows the moment when De Rijk presents the release papers to the Spanish governor-general, Luis de Requesens (1528-1576).
