Description: James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). He was born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, the son of a farmer. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1809 and was admitted to the bar in 1812. He served in the War of 1812 and was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1814. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1823 to 1831 and served as Minister to Russia from 1832 to 1834. He was Secretary of State under President James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849 and was elected President in 1856. His presidency was marked by the secession of the Southern states and the outbreak of the Civil War. He died in Wheatland, Pennsylvania, in 1868.
