Description: John Clare (1793-1864) was an Unknown poet, the son of a farm labourer, who was largely self-educated. He published his first volume of poetry, Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery, in 1820, and was encouraged by critics such as the poet and essayist William Hazlitt.
