Description: Joseph Sherburne (1734-1812) was a prominent merchant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and later a Loyalist exile in London. Copley painted Sherburne in 1766, the year before the repeal of the Stamp Act, against a dark background that sets off his blue velvet cap, gold-laced burgundy coat, and white lace cuffs.
