Artist: Albrecht Durer
Artwork: Knight, Death, and the Devil
Description: This artwork is an engraving print finished in 1513. It is one of Durer’s most famous works and is part of a series of prints known as the “Master Engravings”. The image depicts a knight on a horse, accompanied by a dog, riding through a dark forest. The knight is confronted by three figures: a skeleton-like figure representing Death, a monstrous creature with the head of a goat and the body of a horse representing the Devil, and an old man with a long beard and a tattered cloak representing Time. The knight is shown as brave and determined, despite the dangers that surround him, and the image has been interpreted as a symbol of the power of faith and the human spirit in the face of adversity.
