Artist: David Roberts
Artwork: Lycian Tomb
Description: In 1838, David Roberts visited the ancient city of Xanthos in Lycia, an area of southwestern Turkey. Xanthos was the capital of the Lycian League, a group of independent cities that allied themselves with the Persians in the fifth century bc. The city was conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 bc and was later ruled by the Romans. Roberts’s drawing shows the ruins of a Lycian tomb.
