Description: The painting depicts the Roman hero Marcus Curtius who sacrificed himself for the good of Rome. According to legend, a chasm had opened up in the Roman Forum and could only be closed by throwing the most precious possession of Rome into it. Curtius, believing that Rome’s most precious possession was its citizens, jumped into the chasm on his horse.
