Description: The painting depicts the death of Argus at the hand of Mercury. Argus was a giant with a hundred eyes, who was ordered by Zeus to guard Io, a priestess of Hera. Mercury was sent by Zeus to kill Argus, and he did so by lulling Argus to sleep with his music and then cutting off his head.
