Description: This painting depicts the encounter between Oedipus and the Sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a woman and the body of a lion. The Sphinx has been terrorizing the city of Thebes, and Oedipus, the son of Laius and Jocasta, has been sent to solve the riddle that the Sphinx has posed to the city. If Oedipus can answer the riddle, the Sphinx will leave Thebes; if he fails, the Sphinx will devour him.
