Description: Philip Van Cortlandt (1749-1831) was a prominent New York merchant and civic leader who served as the first Treasurer of the United States under President George Washington. Van Cortlandt was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1788 to 1790 and served as the first president of the New York Chamber of Commerce from 1784 to 1787.
