Description: This painting is a panel from the altarpiece of the church of San Benito el Real in Valladolid, Spain. The altarpiece was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, and was completed in 1499. The panel depicts Plato, one of the most important philosophers of ancient Greece. He is shown seated in a chair, wearing a green robe and a blue tunic. He has a book in his left hand and is pointing to it with his right hand. The background is a red curtain and a column.
