Description: Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), known as the Young Pretender, was the grandson of James II and VII and the son of James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender. He was born in Rome, where his father held court in exile. In 1745, he landed in Scotland and raised an army in an attempt to regain the British throne for the Stuarts. He was defeated by the Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and fled to France. He spent the rest of his life in exile in Italy and France.
