Description: Prince James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) was the son of James II and VII and his second wife, Mary of Modena. A Roman Catholic, he was brought up in exile at the court of Louis XIV of France. his father’s death in 1701, he was recognised as James III of England and VIII of Scotland by Louis XIV and the other Catholic powers, but never succeeded in regaining the throne. He is shown here in early middle age, wearing armour and the red velvet robes of the Order of the Garter.
