Description: The sketch is preparatory for a ceiling fresco in the Palazzo Labia in Venice, begun in 1746. The subject is taken from Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Gerusalemme liberata (1581). Armida, the beautiful sorceress queen of Damascus, has lured the Christian knight Rinaldo to her enchanted island, where he has become enervated by her charms. The archangel Michael appears to Rinaldo in a dream, urging him to break free from Armida’s spell and return to the war against the Muslims.
