Description: This is a preparatory drawing by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo for a ceiling fresco in the Palazzo Clerici in Milan. The fresco depicts a scene from Torquato Tasso’s epic poem “Gerusalemme liberata”. Rinaldo is a Christian knight who has been enchanted by the sorceress Armida. She has lured him to her island, where he has forgotten his duty to God and his country. The angel Michael appears to Rinaldo in a dream and urges him to break free from Armida’s spell.
