Description: This painting depicts Saint Benedict of Nursia in the cave at Subiaco where he lived as a hermit for three years. The small figure of Benedict at the bottom of the painting is shown praying in the entrance to the cave, while above him two Benedictine monks converse on the rocky slopes of the mountain. At the top of the painting, a ray of light shines down from heaven, symbolising the divine inspiration that Benedict received in his solitude.
