Description: Sir Home Riggs Popham (1762-1820) was a British naval officer and explorer. The son of Admiral William Popham, he joined the Royal Navy in 1778 and served in the American War of Independence. In 1791, he commanded an expedition to Botany Bay in Australia, where he founded the first European settlement at Sydney Cove.
