Description: Sir Paul Rycaut (1628-1700), orientalist and diplomat, was born at Downham, Norfolk, the son of Peter Rycaut (1592-1660), a Turkey merchant. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Gray’s Inn. In 1661 he was appointed secretary to the Levant Company at Constantinople, where he remained for twelve years.
