Description: This is a preparatory drawing for the altarpiece of the church of San Ildefonso in Madrid. The altarpiece was commissioned by King Charles III and was completed in 1774. The painting depicts the moment when Saint Ildefonso, the Archbishop of Toledo, is cutting a piece of the cloak of Saint Leocadia. The saint is said to have appeared to Saint Ildefonso in a vision and to have given him a piece of her cloak as a sign of her protection.
