Description: This work is a preparatory drawing for Delacroix’s painting The Massacre at Chios, which is now in the Louvre. The painting depicts the massacre of civilians on the Greek island of Chios by Ottoman troops in 1822. Delacroix was inspired to create the painting after reading a poem about the massacre by the French poet Casimir Delavigne.
