Artist: Perino del Vaga
Artwork: Studies of a Young Woman Reclining, Holding an Urn
Description: This is a preparatory drawing for a fresco by Perino del Vaga. The fresco depicts the story of Erigone, who was the daughter of Icarius. Icarius was a man who was given a skin of wine by Dionysus. He drank too much of the wine and became drunk. He then went to his vineyard and fell asleep. A group of shepherds found him and killed him. Erigone was devastated by her father’s death and hanged herself. In the fresco, Erigone is shown reclining on a couch, holding an urn containing her father’s ashes.
