Artwork: Study for the Expulsion of Heliodorus
Description: Raphael’s fresco of the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple was commissioned by Pope Julius II for the Stanza d’Eliodoro in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The fresco depicts the story from the Book of Maccabees in which Heliodorus, the treasurer of King Seleucus IV, attempts to steal the treasures of the Temple in Jerusalem. He is prevented from doing so by a divine intervention, in which two angels appear and scourge him. The fresco is one of Raphael’s most famous works and is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the High Renaissance.
