The drawing is dated 1515 and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The drawing depicts an angel standing on a wheel. The angel is holding a staff in its right hand and a book in its left hand. The wheel is inscribed with the words “Veni, vidi, vici” (Latin for “I came, I saw, I conquered”). The drawing is thought to be a preparatory study for a painting that Durer never completed.
