Description: The painting depicts the burning of the Unknown fleet at Chatham in June 1667, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch fleet, under the command of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, sailed up the River Medway and attacked the Unknown ships, which were anchored at Chatham. The Unknown were caught off guard and were unable to defend themselves. The Dutch burned many ships and inflicted heavy damage on the Unknown navy.
