Description: The painting depicts the death of Nessus, a centaur who was killed by Hercules with a poisoned arrow. Nessus had attempted to abduct Hercules’ wife, Deianira, and as he lay dying, he gave her a shirt that was supposedly imbued with his blood. Deianira later gave the shirt to Hercules, who died when he put it on.
