Artist: Vittore Carpaccio
Artwork: The Departure of Ceyx
Description: The painting depicts the story of Ceyx and Alcyone from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Ceyx, king of Thessaly, is about to set sail for Claros to consult the oracle of Apollo, leaving his wife Alcyone behind. Alcyone is distraught at the thought of being separated from her husband and begs him not to go. Ceyx reassures her that he will return safely and sets sail. However, the ship is caught in a storm and Ceyx is drowned. Alcyone is so grief-stricken that she throws herself into the sea and is transformed into a kingfisher.
