Artwork: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple
Description: The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It is located in the Stanza di Eliodoro, one of the four Raphael Rooms in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. The fresco depicts the story of Heliodorus, a general of the Seleucid king Seleucus IV Philopator, who attempted to steal the treasure from the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Book of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus was driven out of the Temple by two angels. Raphael’s fresco shows Heliodorus being attacked by a horse and two angels. The painting is full of movement and drama, and the figures are depicted with great realism.
