Artist: Johan Joseph Zoffany
Artwork: The Reverend Philip Cocks
Description: The Reverend Philip Cocks (1735-1797) was an Anglican clergyman who served as chaplain to the British East India Company in Bengal from 1769 to 1789. He was also a talented amateur artist and produced a number of paintings and drawings of Indian subjects. This portrait, painted in 1784, depicts Cocks in his clerical robes, seated in a chair and holding a book. The painting is a fine example of Zoffany’s portraiture and provides a valuable historical record of an important figure in the history of the British East India Company.
